What are you creating in the world?

You know, I’m creating my beautiful life! I hope that doesn’t sound contrite, but I’m not sure how else to answer…

Back in March last year I decided to quit my day job – working with my husband on his online business. Since then, I’ve been turning over many ideas, primarily involving my organic lifestyle website, and although I’m actively doing that on a weekly basis, I’ve been spending the last six months and more working on trying to figure out what I truly want from this beautiful life. I’m not entirely sure what it all amounts to, to be honest!

I’m finding the magic in each day, in very small – and sometimes very big ways. I’m learning and listening and giving thanks for all the awesomeness I’m privileged to come across.

How has experiencing Soul Reflections helped?

I started Full Moon Dreamboarding and journalling earlier this year and it has – alongside some other significant sharing and learning with a circle of very smart and creative women – has just turned my life upside down and inside out, in the most glorious of ways!

Moving on to to take the Soul Reflections workshop was a no-brainer, I’ve been seeing so many revelations and results from the other boards and journal entries that I couldn’t not do it. It was an amazing experience, from start to finish. Even the meditation I did beforehand was massively powerful – I cried joyously (an almost unheard of event) for ten minutes! Listening to your voice, Jamie really was like having you in the room with me and I felt genuine love and support. That was really valuable, given that when I checked in to get in touch with my feelings at the start of the exercise, I was most definitely feeling apprehensive and vulnerable.

The two Quick & Dirty exercises were an absolute revelation – so very quick and impossibly insightful that I was jumping up and down after them, shaking with excitement! They were so much fun to do into the bargain! I’d have been tempted to move past these warm-ups but they worked so well, that now I’m planning to repeat them more often.

I was completely absorbed creating my Soul Reflections board. It felt like an act straight from the soul of me – from my very essence. Very definitely sacred. The energy was palpably different from that of the preparatory work. I did spend a wee bit overly long doing it, but oh, there was so much flowing and I felt so emotional but also safe, warm and protected throughout.

And it didn’t just work on the day with the specific answers I was seeking – I’m seeing its influence manifest in the ever-increasing “D’oh” moments that are happening even weeks on.

What have you learned about yourself through Soul Reflections?

When I first completed the board I had a set of answers that suited me well, but what I didn’t realise was just how much it would really stir my soul. I’ve recognised and been able to touch the truly wild and powerful version of me: the part of me that was locked up and didn’t feel quite good enough. I’ve been reminded to listen to the particularly vibrant female energy I have access to at this new middle age.

What would you like to celebrate?

Within a couple of weeks of completing Soul Reflections I had launched my new blog www.juliegibbons.com. I’m using that as a place to celebrate the creative me! I’d no idea I needed this place to be honest, thinking that all of this analysis and reflection should be focused on earning an income! But we each of us need oil to keep the machine going, and it turned out this is my magic oil!

I also wouldn’t wish to forget to celebrate all the women who conquer their fears and celebrate their own creative spirit every single day – and the magic that is the interwebs for allowing us to connect! For without all of you, I’m sure I’d still be locked in a somewhat confused and angry place.

What are you creating in the world?

Right now I am trying to create a world that feels like home. I know that sounds selfish and strange, but I know that until I am able to look myself in the face and recognize what I see, I will not be able to give the world everything it needs from me. I have realized recently that an enormous part of my daily living comes from a place of fear and as long as that is how I operate, there is no hope of me ever feeling at home. As dark as that sounds, I feel like this is opening me up in huge ways.

How has Soul Reflections helped?

When I finished Soul Reflections the first thing I did was write to Jamie and tell her she had kicked my *ahem* butt! I had done vision boards before, but the activities Jamie has you do make you go so much deeper than would do on your own. I felt like a part of myself that I had been ignoring took over and completed the board for me. Soul Reflections showed me that I had been living a very grey version of my life. Everything on it sizzles with magic and passion and colour and connection. There is a vitality and a vibrancy that comes from it that really surprised me. Where was that in my real life and why did my own board scare me a little bit? As I said to Jamie, it was a real kick to the system.

What have you learned about yourself?

I have learned that the parts of ourselves that we think we have hidden the best (or have forgotten about) are the ones that need our attention the most. Raised a good girl in a religious family, I thought I hid my interest in magic and spirituality well. Looking back I know that my family actually would have fully supported me, but for some reason I was ashamed of (or maybe scared of) the brightest, most passionate bits of myself. When I bought SARK books I would sit in my bedroom with my back up against the door so no one would catch me reading. I bought tarot cards and then hid them in my closet thinking nobody would notice. (HA! My brother bought me a spells book one birthday. Talk about noticing!) I know now that I was scared. For some reason – who knows what – I was scared of myself. I was scared to let go, to be bright and full and loud and magic and dark. I was scared of my own power. In many ways I still am. This exercise reminded me that all of it is still there and that I want it back.

Tami’s experience with Soul Reflections

I think I get so caught up in the “to-do” lists and the “shoulds” in life that I forget to listen to the “me”. I’m at the point where life is shifting. One child in college, one in high school, and now I have to figure out what is next. As a woman and a mother, it is so easy to think of the needs of those around me. I think we forget to think about our own needs and desires.

And what is it that I want? What are my desires? These are tough questions for me. I have discovered this love of creating – of color. I’m not sure where this love will lead me. Not sure what I want to be when I grow up : )
I stumbled upon Jamie Ridler’s Soul Reflections site. I’ve often done collages with images but never thought much about them other than they were fun, entertaining. Jamie carries that much further.

I was intrigued. I bought the home edition, downloaded it, collected my supplies and then several weeks went by. I couldn’t find the few hours needed to actually complete the workshop!!! Frustrating and so true in my life right now. There just doesn’t seem to be time for me to create, to breathe!

But I did find the time. I took a morning while the second child was SAT testing and went to a coffee shop. It was way too distracting there for me to focus. Too many people, too much noise. So, I went to my car and did the workshop in my car, in a parking lot. And it was amazing. I followed Jamie’s directions and just let myself cut images and paste and think and I learned so much about myself and what direction I am heading.

This image of energy appeared in the midst of all these images of calm, meditative colors, and images. I loved how that happened. I do have a sense of energy in myself that I had not realized. I found the whole process enlightening. I carried the sense of wonder with me throughout the week. I’m still pondering and wondering what next. Now I have a sense of peace about it.

What are you creating in the world?

Overall, I am creating a space for all of those who cross my path to BELIEVE in illuminating magic, in spectacular possibilities, in uplifting joy, and in unbridled creative expression!

We have all experienced those dark nights of the soul and times when “all hell breaks loose.” I’ve come out the other end to see the light at the end of the tunnel. My intention is to be an empowering guide for others to claim their brilliance and magnificence.

How has Soul Reflections helped?

My business, Expressive Hart, is flourishing with gusto – my motto for 2010. Even though I have many exciting projects and opportunities, not to mention new technology to learn like Photoshop and Squarespace, sometimes I feel overwhelmed and a bit scattered.

Soul Reflections was most helpful in providing me the time and space to deeply reconnect with my Inner Being and to listen to the wisdom of my soul. The experience was so soothing AND enlightening.

What have you learned about yourself?

I am reminded once again how important it is to take time, even when I don’t think I have the time, to get centered and aligned so that I can hear the whisperings of my wise soul. What are you creating in the world?

This is a difficult question for me to answer.  I know what I would like to create in the world, but I’m not always convinced that I’m actually creating it.  I have to remind myself to not compare my attempts to others’ and to only measure my success with my personal yardstick.

I decided to answer this question with affirmations… affirmations that I will continue to use as my mantra as long as necessary:

• I am creating BLISS for myself and anyone that wants to follow along.
• I’m creating ART that encourages connection, validates emotion and nourishes the soul.
• I am creating DREAMS… big ones.  Dreams that require the use of words like daring, joyous, productive, bold, brave and fierce.
• I’m creating my dream business through sharing my passion for art, personal growth and creativity.
• I’m creating a life and no longer just allowing life to happen to me.
• And most importantly, I’m creating situations that allow me to shout at the top of my lungs to anyone that will listen…

How did Soul Reflections help?

Soul Reflections helped me clearly see my hearts deepest desires and wishes.  In the few short hours I spent, much was revealed to me, about me.

I loved connecting with the images in the magazines, searching for things that jumped out at me; color, shapes, words that inspire, affirm and validate.  Seeking among them, comfort, challenge, risk, desire and emotion. The sound of tearing paper and the sticky feeling of glue on my fingers added to the experience.  Bliss.  Pure and simple.  A clear reflection of my soul and how I felt at that moment.

I learned that a red leather sofa makes me giddy.  I almost didn’t include that image.  I thought it was a little silly, but a few days later while tagging along to the furniture store with my mother-in-law, I found the very sofa I hope to own someday.  It is even better than the one I envisioned when I ripped it out of that magazine.  When I sat on it, I melted.  Smooth.  Soft.  Comforting. Validating.  It felt like home and I can picture it in my house, in my front room.  I visualize where it will sit and I see myself sitting there… writing…  dreaming… planning… enjoying… being.

I also realized how much I adore the atmosphere of cozy coffee shops and how getting lost in thought and day dreams inspire me.  I acknowledged that words and fonts and trees and mandala-like doodles are just as inspiring.  As is the beach… and lime green.

I found that the images I selected were ones that were encouraging, positive, comforting, inspiring and blissful… all attributes of the kind of person I strive to be.

What I love most about the Soul Reflections process is that it gives permission to seek, wonder and dream.   It gives me freedom to explore and reveal more about me, to me.  I look forward to going through this process again and again.
