Creative Living Learning: Guitar

March 14, 2013

in Learn

Justin and I are learning guitar, which totally surprises and delights me. We spent ages trying to figure out how to start, what to try. Finally we landed on taking two months of introductory classes which should give us a start and a chance to figure out if we like it.

Learning something new can be kind of (by this I mean “really”) intimidating. When we walked into a guitar store for the first time it was overwhelming. So many choices! So many people playing riffs, having opinions. We couldn’t even play a chord.

We walked out empty handed and overwhelmed.

Now that we’re taking a class, guitar rental is included. Someone from the music school introduced us to the guitars we had to choose from, explained their relative advantages, played them a little bit, showed us how to tune them and then let us be for a while.

Perfect.

It was enough information to get us started and then space to let us find our way. What had felt tense and confusing suddenly felt like an adventure. You should have seen us beaming when we left with our guitars, Justin with his in hand and me with mine on my back.

I can’t wait to see what happens next.

My partner, James, is a guitar teacher at a local music store. He has students from 8-70something. He loves teaching and gets so stoked when new students come in and end up falling in love with it. Congratulations on your new adventure! Have fun with it!!!

My favorite line in this post: “What had felt tense and confusing suddenly felt like an adventure.”

Isn’t it the best feeling when we sink below the fear and reach the play spot? Yeah!
