Develop a Practice: Meditation in October

in Develop a Practice

We’ve just completed a month of morning pages – yay! – and it’s clear that having a regular place to check-in really supports us in developing a practice. So for October, I’d love for us to go on another journey together – this time into meditation. Now, this intimidates the heck out of me. I’ve come back to this post and deleted it many times! I know nothing about meditation except that it’s calling and when I recently asked for meditation resources so many people responded that I know there’s something here. Let’s find out what it is!

There are many ways to meditate, so there are many ways to participate. The key here is to define what it is you’d like to practice this month and then do your best to come to it each day. It may be meditation of a particular tradition you are familiar with. It may be a walking meditation. You may give yourself 10 minutes for a guided meditation each day. It can be as simple as 5 minutes of daily chair-and-stare time. It is up to you what your “meditation time” looks like. To me, this is about committing to time every day to be still with myself.

Why Meditate?

Susan Piver offers some great reasons to explore this practice. (She uses the word *magic*, so you know I’m in!)

Meditation Resources

  • Susan Piver’s blog is rich with meditation resources. One great way to get some support for your meditation practice this month is to join her Open Heart Project which teaches you how to meditate through a series of emails and videos, including 5, 10 and 40 minute practices. (Psst. It’s free) This is what I’m using to guide my meditation this month.
  • Insight Timer is an app that’s available both for iPhones and Androids. It not only holds the time for your practice, it also lets you know how many others are meditating at the same time. It’s a beautiful way to feel connected as we go through this month together.

Joining in:

  • Define your practice. What will your daily meditation time look like? Share in the comments.
  • Anyone is welcome to join. If you’d like to make it official and say, “Yes, I’m in!” add your name to the Mr. Linky below. That way we can also come visit and see who we’re playing with.
  • Join me on Facebook or Twitter to participate in daily check-ins.
  • Join in any time.
  • There’ s no pressure here. Just encouragement. Even if you just do one day but that’s more than you would have done before – woohoo!
  • Here’s a badge if you’d like to make it official on your site.

Great idea – Count me in. I currently meditate by listening to Gregorian chant and focusing on the in breath and the out breath. Amazing how well that quiets the mind!

I’m in too. Keep meaning to give meditation a try!

As a yoga fiend, meditation is part of my life and it’s fully integrated in my daily morning ritual to wake up, mind and body-wise (I think I’ll share what I do in the mornings some day, I can’t start the day without my morning “routine”!). I meditate for minimum 7 minutes, sat still on my cushion. Usually I choose to focus on the heart chakra or the third eye, and an intention for my days pops up. Sometimes I just let myself be.

However, sitting still is not an absolute requirement. Even during my runs, as I listen to podcasts ;) or music, I tune in to my breath and how my body moves: that’s my moving meditation. Same in my asthanga yoga classes.
I used to think meditation was boring, well trust me it’s not!

If any of you needs any kind of support, let me know! :)

I’m in! I’ve flirted with a meditation practice for a long time but have never settled down to practice consistently. This may be just what I need!

Morning pages inspired me to start a 2x daily meditation practice. The first sitting I do immediately after writing morning pages to center myself for the day. I focus on my breath and repeat to myself or out loud (whichever I feel like I need that day): “I am one with everything in the entire universe, everything that has ever been and everything that will ever be.” (based on some good science and physics cause I’m a nerd like that). The second sitting is more a visualization where I attempt to manifest an image of the people in my life connecting and being authentically happy. This will, as the practice expands, grow to include strangers and ya know, life, the universe and everything. :)

I’ve been at it for, what, a little over a week now? I started at 10 minutes and I’ve pushed to 12 and would love to get to 30 for a total of an hour/day. I think that would be prrrrrrreetty amazing!

Okay, I will join you.

I’m in! Last night, I watched my first DVD of Thich Naht Hanh..so inspiring! Now, this invitation (thank you, Jamie!). I’m a “newbie” and I look forward to exploring guided meditation..thank you for this exciting opportunity:)

I am in. I have tried to have a more regular practice, so I am looking forward to this!

I’m in. I’ve done a little meditation as quiet time in the morning but have been meaning to try guided meditation….. Here’s the invitation I’ve needed. Thank you Jamie for pushing out of your comfort zone and challenging us to do the same!

Wonderful! I’m so glad we’re on this adventure together – out of our comfort zones. Let’s see where it takes us.

I’m in ! I tried to develop this habit during the last month, but I want to go further ! Thank you to give me this opportunity :)

I’m so glad we’re on this journey together.

I realize I need to declare too that my practice will be 10 minutes a day of seated meditation. What will yours look like?

Tanja October 3, 2011 at 12:45 pm

I’m totally in! I trained as a priestess with the Fellowship of Isis a few years ago now, and while I was training, I did a daily meditation practice for nearly 2 years. Since then, I’ve found it really hard to keep the practice going though. I’ve been trying to rekindle it recently, so maybe this check-in is just what I need :-) Thank you!

Tanja October 3, 2011 at 12:50 pm

Oh! Just realised I should have defined my practice too. The answer for me is that it will be fluid (I’ve learned a few different types, and enjoy choosing whichever one feels intuitively best on the day), but always be *at least* 5 minutes (many days more, but 5 I can definitely commit to daily), seated, and recorded in my meditation journal. For anything beyond that, I’ll try to let my intuition guide me on the day.

I’m in. I so need this. I was attending a weekly meditation group last fall but it fizzled out. I signed up to get Susan Piver’s guided meditations. Thanks, Jamie!

I’m in! I plan on expanding my nightly meditation from 5 minutes to 10 minutes to eventually…30 minutes everyday!

Linda Ursin October 6, 2011 at 2:43 am

I’m joining in because I really need to get back to this. I used to meditate on my way to work, but now I have t sleep, so I’ve lost that time. I’m going to find myself 10 minutes for meditation during the day in stead. I need the break.

Mare October 11, 2011 at 10:30 am

I’m a little late to signing up, but I was just thinking about how I need to get back into a routine with my meditating and noticed this. Sometimes I do notice the universe’s answers!
