Friday Happy: Running. Yes, Running.

Here is something I truly thought I would never say: what made me happy this week was running. Weird. I’ve been an ‘in my body’ person my entire life (You know how I feel about dance – by the way, you’re invited to my fifth annual Shyne Like a Star Virtual Dance Party tomorrow!) but anything related to sports or athletics has always been a nu-uh for me. Phys Ed was painful. I didn’t mind the skills. I enjoyed trying to get a basket or volleying a volleyball but I hated sport culture: the competition, the aggression, the elitism. The only time I ever had fun in gym class was once when for some inexplicable reason our teacher, Mrs. Waldhauser, choose me to be captain. I picked all of the other girls who didn’t rock at sports to be on my team. We had a hoot! I still remember how frustrated the other team was that we just laughed and laughed when we missed the ball! Good times!

So why did I start running? Running just seemed so hard, something for athletes, not a grown woman with asthma! But that’s a part of the reason I did it. It seemed like I couldn’t, so I simply knew that I had to. And I truly do want to support my lungs, my circulation and my body to be healthy, strong and ready to rock. I thought about it for a long time and this week, I just did it. When I shared on Twitter and Facebook, I couldn’t believe the amount of enthusiastic encouragement I received. Thank you everyone!

In case you think running might add to your happy too, here are some things that really helped me:

  • I am following this Learn to Run program and am finding it awesome. I may take longer to go from one level to the next but that’s totally okay.
  • I made a playlist on my iPod that signals me when to change from running to walking. So I have a 5 minute walk song, then a 1 minute run song, then a 4 minute walk song… I don’t have to think. I can just go.
  • I love noticing the different markers of where I am at different points in the run. I love noticing that I started my run as I went around a curve in the sidewalk or that a transition came as I arrived at a streetlight. And I look forward to making it all the way home by the end of the 26 minutes!
  • I’m surprised to say that having dreamier, slower songs during the running has helped me stay calm and centred as I go. I would have thought upbeat music would have kept me motivated, but I’m digging the mellow tunes for running.
  • Hearing people’s stories of how their running improved really makes me trust that the same thing will happen to me. Thank you everyone for sharing your experience!

This is my first week of running and I’ve only been out twice but I’m already connecting to why this will be good for me. I love that it is short, efficient exercise. It’s only a half hour of my day. There’s also the joy of giving my busy brain a break. For 26 minutes, my body gets to be in charge. My mind is still full of thoughts like, “Can I do this?” “What if this is too hard?” “Omg, I can’t make it to the end of this song.”  But weird as it may sound, that still serves as a break from the regular internal dialogue!  The physical benefits of strengthening my heart and lungs are truly the core benefit, but there’s also the confidence that comes with tackling something that you didn’t think you could do and step by step discovering you can.

For this session of The Next Chapter we’re having a mail-around with The Happy Book. Every Friday while the book is in the air, we’re sharing our happy. Everyone’s welcome to join in. Come on over and share what made you happy this week.

Wow, congrats Jamie – you do make it sound fun! And love the programming of the iPod – great not to be tied to a stop-watch. Enjoy your progress!

Wow Jamie. That is awesome. I used to run in middle school. It was a great way to get in shape and get out my frustrations. Now I just walk, I don’t think my knees could take it. But My body always can dance! i wish you continues success in your running shoes. Have a happy week!

Congrats! I started running when I was 39, and did a 5K for my 40th birthday. I don’t run any more, because it’s too hard on my joints for right now, but I really , really loved it! Keep it up! :)

Wow, that’s inspiring. WTG!

I do speed walking with my ipod and I find it so relaxing. Good for you!
Happy running! I’m looking forward to dancing with my grandbabies tomorrow. Happy weekend!

Hi Jamie,

Been reading your posts for awhile now and can’t believe it’s taken me so long to say hello and thank you and wow! You are a creative dynamo, an inspirational extraordinaire, and most definitely a kindred spirit. Congrats on your running. Step by step you’ll “see” more. I will be participating in your Virtual Dance Party tomorrow BIG time. 15 minutes will just be my warm up! :) Cheers!

I’m so glad you stopped in and said hi! It’s awesome to meet you. I’m so glad that we’ll be dancing together tomorrow!

That is so encouraging Jamie — you rock!

Fantastic Jamie! Running is wonderful, I know. It’s a natural high and can give so much. I am so proud of you!

Girl. I have to tell you I *have* been an athlete my whole life (Yup, went to college on a volleyball scholarship and everything), but I *DO NOT* do running. I have short little legs and am a sprinter. Ask me for short bursts of speed and we have no arguements. So when I saw you posting about running I was a little in awe and definitley had to go check out what inspired you. I must admit, I printed out the schedule. Since I haven’t been dancing as much as I used to I have been looking for something else to fill the gap for fitness and I think you may have actually inspired me to take this on… it looks fairly simple (I like the walking parts :) and it looks like a plan I can actually stick to, barring 7 consecutive days of rain. ;-) Boy I love my excuses.

At any rate, thank you for this out of the blue burst of inspiration. I cannot believe I am acutally considering running – of my own free will.
Cheers Love :)

Lol, Shamsi, I felt exactly the same way! Let me know if you give it a go. I’ll see if I can keep it up. All this loving encouragement, it certainly helps!

Thank you so much everyone for your support and positivity. It really helps keep me inspired. Remember, my next run will only be #3, lol!

That’s great, Jamie. I used to run, and loved it – but loved the shower afterward even more. Eventually I did have stop – my joints put up a fuss, so now I walk a lot. Love the idea of using your ipod to trigger when you should change your stride – very clever.

You know, I’m so excited that my friend Annabel, who is an expert on running, yoga and pilates is going to have a chat with me about taking care about being a beginner runner. I’m happy to ask her any questions that anyone else might have too! I’ll be sharing a recording, hopefully next week.

I saw your name in my inbox just now, and feeling in a bit of a rut (just today… not sure why), I said to myself: “whatever Jamie talks about in this blog post, I’m going to use it for inspiration for today”. I laughed when I opened the email and saw running in the title. Unexpected. Something I love doing but have neglected for months. Something I’ve been meaning to get back to but keep putting off. I guess it’s time to tie up my shoelaces again, eh? Jamie, could you post a list of some of your favourite mellow running tunes? xo.

Jamie Ridler May 3, 2010 at 5:47 pm

Hi Melissa! What a treat to see you! I’ll share more about my playlist in an upcoming post but off the top I think Radiohead is a great pick – sort of mesmerizing, gently forward rhythms and a mellifluous melody running over it. So far, so good :)

Ginny April 30, 2010 at 3:27 pm

Way to go Jamie. I don’t think I’ll be able to keep up your running but I definitely can do better at taking a walk each day. I’ll think of you and all that you have taught me as I take my daily walk. Have a great weekend.

The Other Laura April 30, 2010 at 4:33 pm

Jamie, I am so glad you are enjoying running! It is the most effective way for me to get out of my head and completely into my body, I love it!
