Movement Practice in March

in Develop a Practice

I’m fully in love with this monthly ritual of developing a practice! In 2012, we started with morning pages, progressed to meditation and now are starting to move in March! I hope you’ll join me.

What do you mean by “Move”?

Just as you defined your own meditation practice, define your own movement practice. You can choose to walk, run, dance or stretch. You could do Pilates or yoga or Nia or Tai Chi. it can be something different every day. The important part is that each day you give your body the opportunity to move.

Go small. This isn’t about training or weight-loss or hardcore fitness. The focus is developing a practice. Small daily steps are the key. You could choose one song to dance to each morning or one song to stretch to each evening. You could roll your shoulders or wiggle your fingers or remind your hips they can groove. You can move in a class or in nature or at home. You can move with loved ones or alone. The important part is simply to move.

Why Move?

Moving is an act of love. Every time you give your body the opportunity to move, to breathe, to let the blood flow, you are tending to your creative life. You are reminding yourself you are alive. You are giving yourself a chance to express your spirit, here in the physical world. All that and it’s healthy too. If you’re new to moving, ask your doctor what might be a good way for you to get started. Be gentle but consistent.

Joining in:

  • Define your practice. What will your movement time look like? Share in the comments.

I’ll be doing a combo – lots of stretching, some Tai Chi, some dancing, and if we get some nice days I’ll be walking!

My husband and I decided today was the day to begin moving and I love the idea of variety. It keeps it form getting monotonous.

Oh I needed this challenge this month!! Back to daily walks and yoga practice with some dancing thrown in just for the sheer joy of it!! I’ll also be encouraging my husband and daughter to “move it,move it!” as well. It helps if I can lead by example!!

Wow, talk about good timing. I suffered an acute lower back injury three weeks ago, and am finally out of pain and working to develop a daily practice of gentle stretching and strength-building to prevent myself from being forced back into that paincage.

I’m in! Just starting with the gentle physical therapy that I need to do, three times a day.
