My Happy: We Got Our Groove Back!

For a couple of years I have been dreaming of creating a free-form dance event. Just creating a space and a time to dance. No pressure. No need to be cool. Just a space to let our inner dancers out. This week that dream came true!

On Sunday I hosted the first ever Groove Back event. We had a blast! I think I moved every muscle in my entire body. The most amazing part of an experience like this is seeing what magic is created in the moment. There’s very little structure to Groove Back. We start with a circle and some simple guidelines. (Chat is kept to a minimum. You can step in and out of the dance as you like.) We end with a circle. In between we dance. That’s it.

So what happened? Well, there was freedom. There was sweat. There were smiles. There were times when people sat, leaning against the wall, just listening to the music. Someone clapped and suddenly a lively dialogue of clapping and stomping showed up in the room like a rhythmic storm. And then it passed.  Someone sang and suddenly we became a room of women singing “Thank you for letting me be myself again.” People danced around each other and took up space. People got blissfully lost in their own little world. Someone would pick up on the moves of someone else and be inspired to move or jump or shake. People journaled. People moved. People grooved. People left good tired. People left wired. People remembered they are a dancer.

And next time, it will likely be entirely different. As my sister Shannon said, “It would be different if it was raining or if someone had just got engaged or….” And that’s true. This is one of the great joys and mysteries of the circle. You create the space and welcome in the magic of the moment, whatever that might be. Getting in touch with your dance and that magic is a powerful way to get your groove back.

Want to let your dancer out? You can listen to our playlist here.

For this session of The Next Chapter we’re having a mail-around with The Happy Book. Every Friday while the book is in the air, we’re sharing our happy. Everyone’s welcome to join in. Come on over and share what made you happy this week.

What a really good idea! Dancing and music can be so incredibly centering in life. I dance often…in celebration, joy, happiness…in times of sadness, tribulation, and depression…. It really does help!
It looks like your Groove Back was a sensational hit!

The power of dance is amazing, isn’t it? I don’t know if I could dance with abandon in a roomful of people but, at home, I’m Ginger Rogers, Tina Turner and Pilobolus all rolled into one. Keep grooving and have a happy weekend!

I did not get to join you either in person or via the internet … at least not on Sunday. However on Monday, I turned on your playlist and danced around my empty master bedroom alternately smooshing texture paint on the wall while I did. So. Much. Fun.

I have only recently begun reading your blog and listening to your podcast and already it has become so important to me to hear your words of encouragement. It is so important to be reminded of how to just be … be who I am, without apology with all the joy, the creativity, and the peace.

Tonight I am saying thank you and am sharing some love with you from down here in South Carolina, USA. http://alifeprofound.wordpress.com/2010/06/19/receiving-and-sharing-the-love/ There is absolutely NO obligation to continue the play. please just receive the love.

Grace and Peace and of course, Love.

Cynthia
