What Do You Know for Sure?

in Discover Yourself

reflection

In this beautiful community of creative independent spirits one of the deepest yearnings I hear is the longing to simply be who we are, to build a life based on our true selves and to express that self in all that we do. To my mind, this is our life purpose: to be who we are. It’s the most natural thing in the world and the most challenging. So how do we start?

It all begins with knowing who you are.  Knowing your favourite colour or meal or outfit is not a trivial thing at all. Knowing that you love mornings and swimming and mangoes is part of the unique beauty of you. Knowing you’ve got a bad temper and allergies and a history of bad breakups is a part of that beauty too. Authenticity starts with knowing you, all of you.

An easy way to start is with the facts. It’s amazing how many things you actually know about yourself. Here’s the start of my list:

  • I live in Toronto.
  • I’m married.
  • I’m 5’4″.
  • I’m the eldest of 4 kids.
  • I have an MA in theatre.
  • I wear corrective lenses.

Add some likes and dislikes. Knowing your preferences is a powerful way to be grounded in your choices. (By the way, developing a practice of creating dreamboards is a great way to get in touch with your preferences. That’s how I discovered my love of that delicious blue/grey/purple colour!) You can start with some very specific things and also have some more general thoughts.

  • I like dark coffee.
  • I adore my red couch.
  • I love popcorn and rasperries. Though not together.
  • I do not like shellfish. At all.
  • I love studio spaces: white walls, wood floors and room to move.

If you started listing your Absolute No‘s along with me last week, you can add them to the list of things you know for sure.

  • I will not stay up all night to get work done.
  • I will say no to opportunities, no matter how good, that make me feel rushed and ill-prepared.

Another powerful thing to know about yourself is your values and by that I literally mean what you value, what you think is important. Identifying values is one of the first things I do with my coaching clients. Some of my values are:

  • Freedom
  • Love
  • Adventure
  • Inclusiveness
  • Magic

And what about personality traits? What do you really know about yourself? What have people always said about you? (Before you include it on your list, make sure you think it’s true) What may be true that you don’t share readily? What are your more prickly qualities?

  • I am both sunny & enthusiastic and serious & driven.
  • I am a pitbull. I don’t like to let go of a challenge until I’ve got it sorted.
  • I am fiercely independent.
  • I am emotionally brave.

If you dream of creating an authentic life, of expressing your true self, the best first step is getting to know exactly who that is. Spend some time with these questions and a journal. Create your own “What I know for sure” list. If you post about it, be sure to share your link. Another big step is sharing what you know about who you are.

Because I believe so deeply that the root of our purpose is to be found in this self-discovery, I created an at-home workshop to help. If you feel that some structure and a creative process would enhance your self-discovery, please check out Soul Reflections. I designed it for you.

Yes, absolutely, Jamie! It is an amazing thing to get to know ourselves, to begin showing our most real selves here on our blogs, in the heART we share, in the vulnerable moments. One of our long time volunteers thru the MISS Foundation was killed in a car accident this week. Many had communicated with her over the years, had their lives significantly helped by knowing her, the grief is real. Yet, in our every day lives when we tell people we’d never met her in person, the grief, the reality of the friendships was sometimes minimized as “just virtual”. It’s been difficult to find the words and ways to truly convey that many of us begin being our truest selves, discovering our real meaningFULL lives here with friends who are so *not* just virtual. Anyway, as always, thank you for encouraging all of us!!
I’m soooooo appreciative of having your being in my life!

Another great post, Jamie. Although we all try to be perfect and hide our imperfections, it’s really those imperfections that stamp us for who we are and make us different. Loud and clear, your post reflected this.

Sometimes I think you live in my mind and translate into English the things I’m trying to get out.

I’m definitely going to do this exercise. I’m even picking a day — Thursday — to ensure it gets done. (Busy first half of week ahead; if I say I’ll do it today or tomorrow I’ll disappoint myself.)

*scribbles in Moleskine planner* Thursday it is!

i like the questions you ask for yourself and for us, i know i like to create, play with colors, mouvements and words, i also know that i am too much sensitive and that small details can make me cry but i know i can help it with yoga

Fabulous! I love this! Darn, I already posted today. Yes, these are things that are so Jamie. You are emotionally brave! Popcorn and raspberries, wow, just those two words and I have so many food memories of our family. I adore your red couch too! :)

Thank you so much for using the term pitbull in a positive way. I have a pitbull with an incredible will. It’s a blessing to me to have her as an example (most days!)
And also, love your refusal to do things that make you feel rushed and ill-prepared.
I’ve been thinking about writing a manfesta for awhile, this might be the exercise to get that in writing!

Jamie, I just posted What I Know on my blog last week! http://whenigrowupcoach.com/blog/2010/03/16/tough-question-tuesday-what-do-you-know/
It was such a great tool to slay the Vampires that came out when I gave notice at my day job. The questions you pose to expand on this are awesome. Thanks for the inspiration & the gentle push!

Jamie, your post really zinged my heart tonight..I feel pulled to do this, even more, I’m considering your gift of Soul Reflections too. Last year, the first crack of self-honesty appeared thx to our conversation, but now, I feel ready to explore more…

I’m grateful for your gifts, all of them…especially you.

Love this Jamie! All of your suggestions are so helpful when making a list. I especially love the prickly section!

Seems everywhere I turn, this question, or one like it, is being asked. I think I need to do some more Soul Reflecting!

I answered the question on my blog today!

Thanks so much for your enthusiasm and inspiration!!!
xo,
Carmen
