Actually, if it weren’t for minimalism, I wouldn’t be here. I had to get rid of what no longer served me to make room for art supplies. My last art class was third grade and I’m sure it involved macaroni. Then art was cut and I didn’t take another art class until they became available on the internet. Yep, four decades later.

Without letting go of several lives I never did lead, and two that I did (geology prof and serious hiker — yep got rid of my bear mace), I wouldn’t have had the mental, emotional — or more importantly — the physical space to have a paint cart and an art table. Stuff takes an emotional toll too. I finally gave away my mother’s furniture keeping only one piece where I store my art supplies. I can remember her and not feel crushed by the weight of her possessions.

I still wouldn’t call myself a minimalist, but I do have a one in one out policy and it really keeps me from junking up. In order to get more art supplies, I have to use something up or give something else away. And with the space and lack of chatter — and trust me piles of crap grumble and complain constantly — I can learn art. I feel I’m up to high school level and am almost ready to share with the world. :-)
